Staff handled order mix up properly. The food was excellent. Nice atmosphere with classic 90s RnB playing. If you're in Richmond VA check this place out.

It's fairly small so be prepared to wait for a table right around the busiest windows. Menu revolves around chicken, catfish, pork chops, crab cakes and ribs. With sandwich or entree takes on those main proteins. Side dishes are generously sized and really big enough for two people. Salads are very large. Very friendly staff and reasonable prices round out the experience.

Outstanding fried chicken, collards and cornbread! And a really warm atmosphere with friendly service. I felt like a local while I enjoyed time with local family.

This restaurant is amazing! We went on a Monday night and had only a 15 minute wait to be seated. My party of four all enjoyed their entrees. I had the fried catfish with a side of cabbage. Perfect crisp on the fish, succulent cabbage, both nicely spiced but not too much. The rest of our group had the fried chicken. They raved about the crispiness, moist meat and flavor. We got coconut cake and peach cobbler to go--yum! We will definitely be repeat customers, we all loved Mama J's Kitchen!

Mama J’s catered my daughter’s wedding. The staff was amazing. Adrienne ensured the service was professional and exactly what I wanted! The food was absolutely delicious!

This place is AHMAZING!!!! The wait wasn’t nearly as long as expected. The food was so good! The greens were not prepared with pork which is hard to come across. The chicken was well seasoned and nice and crispy! The cornbread was sweet and the yams were too! No complaints!

Khadija was amazing in her suggestions. She was my lovely and attentive waitress! Ordered catfish, greens and Mac n cheese. The fish is fried so delicate that it is simply amazing. The greens are great. Cooked with just enough seasoning. You can add hot sauce if you need spice. The most important thing is they are not overcooked! The Mac n cheese is baked and is definitely how my family cooks it! Overall win and worth every dime!

Vegans, the health-conscious, and the finicky can avoid this place. It is southern and it is fried. Is also very, very tasty with generous portions. Try to save room for dessert (although you may have to ask for a doggie bag you take it home). Unfortunately, reservations are not accepted. It is always crowded so be prepared to wait or come at an offbeat time.

I can't wait to visit MAMA J'S again. It was packed but the food was great. Our waiter was AWESOME!! They even let you sample sides to make sure you didn't waste it. When I say they food is the truth. I definitely going to drive 130 minutes back to Richmond for a date night just so I can go eat at Mama J's!!

I am literally in tears at how amazing this food is. We ordered fried and blackened catfish, grits, greens, and seafood salad. Beyond words, it is rare that everything you order is delicious. Maybe the best cat fish ever.

AMAZING food! I had the fried chicken and it did not disappoint. Macaroni and cheese, green beans, grits, collard greens, and corn bread were all amazing. It was the BEST fried chicken I have ever had. Long wait time, took about 45 min to be seated. Restaurant is very small so seating is limited. Worth the wait for sure! I absolutely recommend this place.

It wasn’t worth the money spent. The chicken was extremely salty. The candied yams had to much nutmeg/cinnamon. The macaroni and cheese was drier than a desert. I heard great things about this restaurant and this was my first time having this food, I was very disappointed. I literally had to get tipsy to eat it.

Excellent service and excellent tasting food. It needs more space down the road to support the crowd it brings in but beyond that it will definitely become a landmark in the city of Richmond for decades to come.

This one of the BEST Soul food spots I've been to in years.. Mostly everything was wonderful. The only thing I didn't like was how salty the cornbread was and the texture and lack of flavor of the coconut cake. But mostly everything was so good that I will come back.

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. I got the catfish which is delicious. The yams were a little over the top for me on the spices but they were okay. I really enjoyed the mac and cheese. The rum cake is also really good. They give you decent portions and the service is nice.

This place is fantastic. Everything I've ever ordered here has been just delicious. I highly HIGHLY recommend the catfish. They have the best collard greens I've ever had in my life and their sweet tea is amazing too. Don't forget to finish your meal with a very generous slice of cake- it doesn't matter which one you get because they are all fantastic. Their staff are all super friendly and service is prompt as well. All around 10/10, you can't go wrong choosing to eat here.

Other than the yams being much too sweet, everything else we ordered was scrumptious. The crab cakes are superb and quite generous in size. The mashed potatoes and gravy were delicious. The cabbage and brisket were equally very tasty. I will definitely visit again, when I'm in the area.

The best of the best. Mama J's is soul food, beyond compare. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu, but the fried chicken and fries catfish are the shining stars on this relatively simple, but expansive menu. In a city where collard greens are a staple, these are definitely in the running for the best in the city. The macaroni and cheese is also outstanding. In a foodcentric town that prides itself on a number of top notch restaurants, Mama J's is one of the most consistently excellent, and without question in the running for best restaurant of its kind in the country.

The sign says ”welcome home!” This may be the truest announcement made... The food is southern and always comforting. Don't skip the catfish nuggets or the cornbread.

I love the food. It just like moms use to cook. It was on a Sunday afternoon when I went there and the place was packed. It was an 2 hour wait for a table and people was outside waiting, if my daughter didn't want any cabbage and macaroni and cheese, we could have waited another time.

Came during lunch rush so understood I would have to wait. My issue was the “home cooking” that took place during the seating. Several outside three tops(we were three) came in and were sat before us. We were quoted 10-20 minutes on our wait we ended up leaving at 40 minutes without getting sat. Very frustrating experience for me and my family. I will return and will not recommend.

Mama J's never disappoints. This is a spot for comfort food. Our waitress was delightful and the food tasty.

OMG! Well worth the 40 minute wait! All of the food and deserts are just ridiculously delicious! Great soul food served up right. Location is small but stays packed. They don't do reservations. If you have a long wait, they'll get your phone number and text you when your table is ready. You can also track where you are in line. Awesome place to eat. I'll be going back every time I visit Midlothian or Richmond.

Mama J's Kitchen has a nice bubbly vibe in the restaurant. There was a 30-minute wait for a table, and customers were happy to wait. Customer service was very good. The staff members we interacted with were welcoming and friendly. Although this wasn't our first visit at the restaurant, we were disappointed this time. The food temperature was excellent, but the fish didn't have the same irresistible crispness we were expecting. And the greens, green beans, and mashed potatoes were a solid B, but nothing more. Everyone's palate is different, so give it a try.

Took a co worker here. It was his first time and he absolutely love it! I've been several times but first time trying the crab cakes, they tasted soooooo good! Great atmosphere, excellent customer service! Love this place.

I waited so long to eat here... I finally came to try it.... The bartender ignored me... Finally when I was about to walk out a very nice employee came up and took my order.... I ordered fried chicken with mac and cheese to go... I opened the tray up and found only two pieces of chicken. I paid almost $13 all I got was two piece chicken, mac and cheese and a small I guess it was corn bread that was wrapped like a cupcake. I thought maybe once I bite this chicken it will be amazing. It was not... Same as any corner store chicken but I paid double... Very dissapointed. I gave two stars because the employee who took my order was nice... Not sure if they were having a bad day but for that price I expect excellence.

BEST Southern food I’ve ever tried!!! We ordered the fries chicken and cat fish and were incredibly, can’t decide which one I like better. I highly recommend this place and I’ll go back again ver soon! The service is also excellent.

Yaasssss Mama J’s!!! First time here was for my birthday! The food is awesome, soooooo good! Drinks that we ordered were excellent!! The fried chicken came out so hot & fresh, nicely seasoned!! The yams were so good, I ordered more to take home! The Mac & cheese was also great!! Can wait to go back!

Honestly wasn’t impressed with what we ordered. (Ribs and chicken) The sides were decent but nothing to tell your neighbor about. However the couple sitting next to us seemed to enjoy their picks. We may just need to revisit and try something else on the menu. The cake looked amazing, may also be worth another try.

All the food I've tried so far has been good except the baked chicken, it was tough and undercooked. The brisket was amazing, the collard green were excellent, the crab cakes were good as well as the peach cobbler, the candied yams were overpowered with nutmeg but the were good as well.

Fries catfish was delicious. The catfish nuggets were similar to the fried catfish. Candied yams were a little too sweet as expected. Peach pie was delicious. Fried chicken plate was also great. The Mac and cheese was a little disappointing. Staff was super friendly. Easy to find parking

I absolutely love the food but the customer service needs work. Today I ordered Parmesan Garlic wings and I travelled 45 minutes to pick them up, only to get home and see that there was no Parmesan Garlic, just plain wings. This is the second time this has happened. I called and they knew they were out but never informed me so I could get another sauce or have the option not to purchase. The manager said, "Parmesan garlic is our most popular and we only make a little bag of it." If that's the case, why don't they make more? My issue is not the fact they didn't have it, but the fact that they didn't inform me at all and I traveled so far to specifically enjoy their Parmesan Garlic wings. If I wanted regular fried chicken, I could've dont it myself in my home instead of wasting $30, gas, and time to travel to them. The manager didn't even try to make the situation any better.

I was able to try their food during a street fair this October, and the fried fish bites were quite possibly the best fried fish I've ever had. The seasoning of the coating was different and really good, some sort of seasoning beyond the usual breadcrumbs, the fish was fried to a perfect crisp and really flaky and flavorful on the inside. The mac was amazing too, as was the cornbread. I can't wait to have them again and try more here!

My husband and I have been wanting to try this place for a while. It was definitely well worth the wait. Not only was this the best soul food restaurant but one of THE best restaurants we have ever eaten at. Great service, large portions, and absolutely delicious food. This will be our new regular spot!!!

I loved it, everything was so good, except for the mac n cheese it was kinda greasy. But I had this rum cake for dessert and it was delicious. I definitely wanna check out some other items on the menu soon!

They are so good. I drive from Pasadena Maryland just to get some of there pork chops and chicken. It's the best.

Amazing food and amazing service. This place is a little small, but they make up for it by having really delicious food. We ordered several plates to try. Our favorite was the brisket on smashed potatoes. Although the other entrees were very good. I feel like their spare ribs deserve to be mentioned as well
